The students, staff and faculty of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine invite you to join us for Picnic Day 2017, the nation's largest university "open house" event. The all-day event takes place rain or shine on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at UC Davis.

SVM faculty, staff and students will showcase a wild array of animal-related events for the entire family at various locations and times.

SVM activities on Picnic Day include:

Hospital Tours: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Guided tours of the veterinary hospital include stops in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory, Veterinary Blood Bank, Small Animal Specialties, Equine Medicine and Livestock Medicine. Tours will have strict participant capacity and registration is on a first come, first served basis. Register on the morning of Picnic Day at the Information Tent located at the entrance to the Small Animal Clinic of the hospital. No prior reservations will be accepted.
Informational Booths: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
School of Veterinary Medicine officials and students will host several promotional and informational booths near the Small Animal Clinic entrance to the hospital. Booths will include a Raptor Center display, information on how to become a veterinary student, backyard poultry biosecurity display, information on student programs and clubs, and animal care services offered at the hospital.
Equine Treadmill Demonstrations: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Seeing a horse gallop on a treadmill at more than 25 miles per hour is a sight to behold. The Equine Athletic Performance Laboratory houses state-of-the-art treadmills that allow veterinarians to assess and monitor a horse’s breathing, heart, and muscle function while it is being exercised at speeds up to a full gallop. Demonstrations will have strict visitor capacity and registration is on a first come, first served basis. Register on the morning of Picnic Day at the Information Tent located at the entrance to the Small Animal Clinic of the hospital. No prior reservations will be accepted.
Emergency Demonstrations: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The UC Davis Veterinary Emergency Response Team will showcase its large animal rescue initiatives with a demonstration in the veterinary hospital’s horse arena, located adjacent to the hospital.
Doxie Derby: 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
The Class of 2019 will continue the 30+-year tradition of veterinary students presenting the Doxie Derby. Dozens of dachshunds race after a simulated rabbit to prove who’s top dog, while thousands of attendees at the ARC Pavilion cheer for their favorite pup.
Parade: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Since the beginning of the SVM more than 60 years ago, students have created a float and featured it in the Picnic Day Parade. The students are hard at work creating this year’s animal-themed float.

Since its inception in 1909, Picnic Day has become the signature event of UC Davis, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to campus every spring. Believed to be the largest student-run event in the nation, Picnic Day showcases the richness of diversity and achievement at UC Davis and the surrounding community in the areas of research, teaching, service, and campus life.
