Veterinary medicine is facing critical shortages of veterinary scientists. Veterinary schools, government and industrial organizations are all in great need of new faculty, researchers or regulatory personnel who will provide the workforce for this new millennium. The opportunities for new graduates in these areas have never been greater. Much of this has come about because of the realization of the role of veterinary scientists in addressing emerging and re-emerging diseases, many of animal origin. The role of veterinary scientists in biomedical research and the role of veterinary scientists in solving environmental and ecosystem health issues are equally important. In addition, the veterinary scientist is needed in academic institutions in order to maintain the teaching and service activities of veterinary schools. The scientific advances and new technologies that came about in the latter part of the 1900s have opened up exciting new approaches to addressing animal diseases, human health and the health of those animals in the environment. The School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis has identified this Veterinary Scientist Training Program (VSTP) as one of the ways in which we intend to address this critical shortage of highly trained veterinary scientists. Our School has the largest and most diverse program in the country to address these challenges. The unique opportunities at UC Davis include the largest academic clinical practice in the world, numerous collaborative research training opportunities with faculty in the School of Medicine, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, College of Engineering and Division of Biological Sciences. The campus has a National Primate Research Center, Center for Comparative Medicine, the Western Institute for Food Safety and Security, Center for Biostabilization, as well as a Wildlife Health Center, Centers for Equine Health, Companion Animal Health, Food Animal Health and a Veterinary Genomics Center. A unique graduate program structure makes it possible for the Veterinary Scientist Training Program to take place in a truly superb educational environment. Bennie I.
