Veterinary Hospital Open House a Success

On April 16, the UC Davis veterinary hospital hosted an open house on Picnic Day for the first time in five years. Hospital staff and students presented many activities for visitors that included alumni, clients, perspective students, parents and members of the local community. Many were exposed to the present state of veterinary medicine for the first time, and were amazed at the advanced level of care now available for animals.

Cancer Gene Twice as Likely to be Defective in Children with Autism

UC Davis Veterinary Surgeons Utilize Artificial Ureter in Kitten

Googgie, a 17-week-old spayed female Sphynx, was brought to the UC Davis veterinary hospital following a three-day bout of inappetence, lethargy and vomiting. Originally seen by the Emergency and Critical Care Service, she was noted to have an enlarged, painful left kidney. With ultrasound, it was discovered that an obstruction of the left ureter was preventing flow of urine to the bladder. It could not be determined through imaging what was causing the blockage, and surgery was needed to discover, then alleviate, the obstruction.

Renal Guidelines a Fluid Resource: New Biomarker Under Consideration to Guide Early Kidney Disease Recognition

As common as kidney disease is in companion animal practice, many practitioners in the U.S. may not be aware that there are guidelines on diagnosing and treating it. UC Davis' Dr. Larry Cowgill, who sits on the board of the International Renal Interest Society, which sponsors the guidelines, said, “All the kidney literature now would probably describe patients on the basis of IRIS staging guidelines, but if those papers aren’t in the literature that general veterinarians are reading—and they’re often in the specialty journals—then they may not be exposed to (the guidelines).”

Equine Specialists Treat Colicky Miniature Therapy Horse

Cherokee, a 2-year-old miniature therapy horse, was recently brought to the veterinary hospital’s Large Animal Clinic with a persistent case of colic that her local veterinarian was unable to treat. On presentation, Cherokee had a distended abdomen, was uncomfortable, and required sedation. Radiographs indicated an intestinal impaction and gas distension. An intravenous catheter was placed in hopes of treating the case non-surgically.

Ari, an 11-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback, has been a patient of the UC Davis veterinary hospital for most of her life. Like many patients of the Hemodialysis and Blood Purification Unit of the hospital’s Internal Medicine Service, Ari is a “lifer” – one of those patients that everyone at the hospital knows, having been to nearly 75 appointments over the past seven years.

Retrieving Lost Crabbing Gear Cleans Ocean

While the delay in crab season has resulted in financial losses to the fishing industry, some Dungeness fishermen have been busy hauling in a different catch instead: lost crab gear. A group of fishermen stretching from Crescent City to San Francisco are collaborating with the Karen C. Ziba, an 8-month-old female Rottweiler, was accidentally hit by a car and suffered extensive injuries to her head four months ago. Her skull and jawbones were fractured in several areas, and brain damage was feared. Thanks to surgeons at the UC Davis veterinary hospital, however, she is on the road to recovery, and her outlook is promising.

Pets with chronic kidney disease (CKD) face a challenging future, but thanks to advances in renal medicine, their lives can still be long and productive. Finding veterinary hospitals that offer treatments for CKD, however, can be difficult. There are less than 20 veterinary facilities throughout the country—and only two in California—that perform hemodialysis treatments. Both California locations are part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Zika virus, first identified in monkeys in 1947 and in humans in 1952, has become a major health concern since 2015, when health officials in Brazil began to notice that an outbreak of the virus coincided with a significant increase in newborn babies with microcephaly, or abnormally small heads. When rancher Paul Plouviez—owner of the 600,000-acre Bench Creek Ranch east of Fallon, Nevada—noticed that much of the mountainous areas of his large ranch were underutilized by his cattle, he thought back to his native France. He noticed that the terrain and climate of the area, with its extremely hot summers and cold winters, closely resembled the Pyrenees mountain range in southern France. He thought Bench Creek Ranch might be ideal land to raise Gascon cattle, a breed which thrives in the Pyrenees.

Kinako, an 8-year-old female domestic shorthair cat, was continually troubled with build-up of tears in her left eye, sometimes resulting in infections. Her owner took her to see their veterinarian, who attempted to flush the tear duct of that eye several times, but to no avail. While the situation was not life threatening, Kinako’s owner did not want her to suffer needlessly for the rest of her life. Kinako’s veterinarian suggested taking her to see the specialists in the Ophthalmology Service at the UC Davis veterinary hospital.

Energy Development Impacts for the Salish Sea

Energy-related developments in the Salish Sea between Washington and British Columbia underscore the need for a transnational approach to assessing the risks to the entire ecosystem, according to a study by the SeaDoc Society, a program of the UC Davis Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center, and the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, part of the area’s indigenous Coast Salish people.The study, published in December in the journal PLOS ONE, identified six development projects proposed and underway in both Canada and the U.S. that would increase marine vessel traffic in the Salish Sea. They include plans to transport coal, shale oil, crude oil and natural gas.

Hospital Represented at International Emergency/Critical Care Conference

Over the past year, third-year veterinary student Joe Raleigh had the unique opportunity to take a major role alongside faculty clinicians in a research project that could revolutionize veterinary blood donations. Recently, Raleigh shared his research discovery with a poster presentation at the 2015 International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS) in Washington, D.C. With his faculty mentors, Drs. Karl Jandrey and Michael Kent, as well as Clinical Laboratory Manager Julie Burges, Raleigh shared the team’s discovery that found canine blood donations with gross lipemia (higher fat content) yield higher platelet concentrations than those from blood that is not lipemic.

Regenerative Medicine Laboratory Helping to Advance Therapies

It’s been nearly 10 years since a team of UC Davis veterinary clinicians and researchers first attempted regenerative medicine procedures on horses with injuries that were not healing by traditional medical means, or had no other treatment options for their conditions. Since then, regenerative medicine, more commonly referred to as stem cell therapy, is making great strides in the veterinary field. Focusing on utilizing healthy regenerative cells to repair tissue or organs, these techniques are helping racehorses return to competition, saving cats suffering from a debilitating oral disease, and aiding dogs stricken with arthritis.

Exotic Specialists Remove Headphone from Turtle’s Stomach

While the overwhelming majority of animals seen at the UC Davis veterinary hospital are dogs, cats and horses, the Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service annually treats thousands of non-traditional pets through regularly scheduled appointments and emergencies. One of those emergencies was a 28-year-old turtle that was suspected of eating a headphone ear bud. The owners found visible bite marks on one of the ear buds, but could not find the matching one of the pair. As an after-hours emergency, the turtle was brought to UC Davis, one of the few 24/7 emergency facilities in Northern California capable of treating a turtle.

Equine Ophthalmologists Return Event Horse to Championship Competition

After an all night drive returning from the March Copper Meadows event, rider and owner Frankie Thieriot turned out her champion three-day eventer horse Chatwin so he could stretch his legs after the long drive. Checking on him a few hours later, she noticed Chatwin had injured his eye, most likely by grazing a tree branch. Having dealt with eye injuries in a previous horse, Thieriot knew the severity of the injury and knew her 7-year-old gelding needed immediate care.

Intensive Care Unit Sees Dog Five Times in Two Years

Lorelai, a 3-year-old French bulldog, is still young but has already endured a lifetime of medical treatments. At just six months old, she was brought to the emergency room at the UC Davis veterinary hospital after vomiting and having difficulty breathing. The specialists in the Emergency and Critical Care Service diagnosed her with a noncardiogenic pulmonary edema (fluid build-up in the lungs) and aspiration pneumonia, a lung infection caused by stomach fluid being inhaled into the lungs. Lorelai was struggling so much to breathe that mechanical ventilation was started immediately. This required Lorelai to be kept anesthetized while a machine breathed for her. She received around-the-clock, one-to-one nursing care in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Around 3:30 a.m., the medication began to wear off, and Abby tried to lie down again. It was becoming increasingly difficult to get her up. So at 4 a.m., I loaded Abby into the trailer and started the long drive to UC-Davis."

Interventional Radiology Surgery Suite Opens

The hospital recently opened the Interventional Radiology (IR) Surgery Suite in the Small Animal Clinic. The suite, complete with all new equipment, has elevated the type of surgeries the Soft Tissue Surgery Service is able to perform, as well as those surgeries’ quality and effectiveness. Performing as many as 10 IR procedures a week, UC Davis has the largest IR caseload of any teaching hospital.

Hospital Deeply Impacted by California Wildfires

On September 14, the UC Davis veterinary hospital received the first of what would become dozens of animals from the Valley and Butte Fires over the following three weeks. In total, the hospital treated 56 animals – 40 cats, 5 chickens, 4 horses, 2 pigs, 2 goats, 2 dogs, and 1 rabbit. In order to accommodate the sudden influx of patients, faculty and staff worked long hours (volunteering nights and weekends) to care for the animals and to transpose areas of the hospital into makeshift care wards.

Success Continues with Opening Blocked Nasolacrimal Ducts

For more than a year, several hospital Services have joined forces to achieve success treating blocked tear ducts. When structures of the complex tear drainage system—collectively known as the nasolacrimal apparatus (NLA)—become blocked, infections can occur, leading to discomfort, tear staining and discharge from the eye, with subsequent skin inflammation. Now, thanks to advances in equipment, technique and teamwork, clinicians from UC Davis’ Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Anesthesia, and Diagnostic Imaging Services are having unprecedented success treating NLA blockages in multiple species.

With Dr. Sykes relinquishes her Small Animal Clinic directorship, Dr. Kate Hopper takes over that role on an interim basis.

Since first arriving at the school more than 10 years ago, Dr. Bret McNabb, has experienced just about every aspect of life at the veterinary hospital. Starting as a first year student (and also a hospital technician while in school) in 2003, he has quickly escalated through the ranks, and was recently named to the faculty as assistant professor of Clinical Livestock Reproduction in the Department of Population Health and Reproduction.

Foal Born at UC Davis through Unique In-Vitro Fertilization Process

At midnight on a warm summer evening in the barns at the UC Davis veterinary hospital, a first in equine medicine at UC Davis occurred. As Dr. Bruce Christensen, chief of the hospital’s Equine Reproduction Service, watched on, a mare gave birth to the first foal ever born at UC Davis by in-vitro fertilization. Through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), an in-vitro process of impregnating a mare was successful at the renowned veterinary school. This story’s origins, however, go back almost a quarter of a century.
