Area Teacher Receives Distinguished Service Award 

May 18, 2005--Mary Silan Seawright received the Distinguished Service Award from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine at the school's Annual Awards Ceremony May 18, 2005. This award honors individuals or organizations whose exemplary service as volunteers, professionals, or advocates has enriched School of Veterinary Medicine programs and enhanced its teaching, research, and community service missions.

Mary SeawaterAs a teacher in the Marysville Joint Unified School District for more than 50 years, Ms. Seawright introduced young school children in Marysville to the worlds of animal health and higher education. Scores of second- and third-graders found their first exposure to veterinary medicine during field trips with Ms. Seawright to the school's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

In 1987, Ms. Seawright established the Mary Silan Seawright Scholarship, providing financial and personal encouragement to veterinary students interested in small animal practice. She was attending the Awards Ceremony to meet four new recipients of the Seawright Scholarship. Ms. Seawright also supported construction of the school's Center for Companion Animal Health, opened in 2004.

UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, California's only public veterinary school, provides teaching, research and service programs that benefit animal, human and environmental health. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program graduates 122 veterinarians each year.
