Claudia Sonder, director of the Center for Equine Health
Following a national search and upon the recommendation of the recruitment advisory committee, Dr. Claudia Sonder has been appointed as Director of the Center for Equine Health (CEH) effective June 1, 2013, she has served as Interim Director since January.
As Director, Dr. Sonder will uphold the CEH mission and provide leadership and administrative management of the CEH, including direct oversight of an equine herd sufficient to meet the school’s teaching, research, and clinical service needs. On behalf of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, she will manage the CEH United States Department of Agriculture certified Contagious Equine Metritis isolation facility and testing center. As a liaison between the school and the equine industry in California and nationally, Dr. Sonder will develop and refine, a strategic vision and plan for the CEH that is aligned with the school’s Strategic Plan.
Sonder will be responsible for monitoring the equine industry’s needs and participate with government and non-government organizations and individuals in providing scientific and educational resources to solve industry problems. Additionally she will be responsible for development of educational materials for media distribution that reflect the expertise of the school’s faculty and current research activities in equine health care and promote the excellence and reputation of the school’s equine programs, nationally and internationally. To ensure adequate support for CEH operations and equine programs, including resident training and graduate education, Sonder will actively cultivate philanthropic support.
