Congratulations Class of 2014!

Congratulations to our 135 newly minted DVM and three MPVM students! UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine celebrated its 63rd Commencement Ceremonies on June 13th at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on campus. Speakers included UC Davis Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph Hexter; alum Marguerite Pappaioanou, who now serves as the Center for Disease Control to the FDA; Assistant Professor Matthew Mellema; and students Dustin Dennis and Margaret Wilson.

While the various speakers had sound advice for the graduates (follow your passion, keep learning, retain compassion, and read at least 10 pages of something useful daily), perhaps the most sage guidance came from Mellema. He turned to the soon-to-be DVMs and told them: Whenever boarding a plane, particularly for a long flight, simply introduce yourself to your seat mates and tell them you work for the IRS. Never let on that you are a veterinarian or you will spend the entire flight being asked for advice on Rocky the dog and a three legged cat owned by someone’s mother.
