Dr. Gary Magdesian Honored with 2015 SVM Faculty Clinical Excellence Award

Dr. Gary Magdesian exceeds all expectations for the SVM Faculty Clinical Excellence Award. His passion, dedication, and exceptional knowledge in equine internal medicine, pharmacology, and emergency and critical care have made him a preeminent clinician in his field.

Dr. Magdesian completed his DVM in 1993 at UC Davis. He completed an internship in LA Medicine and Surgery at Texas A&M in 1994 and came back to do an equine medicine residency at Davis from 1994-1997. He was awarded a fellowship in Emergency & Critical Care from 1998–2000. He is now the Endowed Roberta A. and Carla Henry Chair in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care.

Dr. Magdesian has redefined patient care for equine medicine patients. His compassion for patients and clients alike make him a role model for all. He is an exceptional teacher and instructor and always goes the extra step to improve a patient’s well-being, spending countless hours reviewing cases and pathophysiological mechanisms for the benefit of the patient as well as training for students and residents. Dr. Magdesian’s amazing breadth of knowledge and ease of approach to explaining complex issues are admired by his peers.

Dr. Magdesian is a productive researcher, seeking any opportunity to tackle unsolved issues. His research is cutting edge and clinically relevant. His major contributions have been in neonatal pharmacology and epidemiology of infectious pathogens, such as Clostridium difficile. His research mentorship style is unmatched.

Dr. Magdesian is a professional, respectful and collegial communicator, adept at tailoring the message to the audience, without becoming lost in details. He was key in improving communications in the equine medicine service. His dedication and efforts towards improving communications with clients and referring veterinarians are paying off by an increasing caseload and client satisfaction.

Perhaps one of his greatest contributions at the VMTH is his role as the Large Animal Clinic (LAC) biosecurity officer. He has, over the past 14 years been dedicated to reducing the risk of infectious disease transmission in the LAC.

Last but not least, Dr. Magdesian is a tremendously approachable, compassionate, kind individual.
