Dr. Jorge Nieto

Dr. Jorge Nieto is recognized with the SVM Faculty Clinical Excellence Award for his exemplary service and dedication to the Equine Surgery Program. He is considered an outstanding clinician, mentor, teacher and colleague; an excellent role model for students and residents.

Dr. Nieto came to Davis more than 20 years ago. During that time he completed an equine surgery residency and a PhD before becoming a faculty member in Equine Surgical Emergency and Critical Care. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Nieto has contributed significantly to the diagnosis of colic, specifically intestinal ischemia. He is known for his ability to work well with people from all socioeconomic backgrounds and his bilingual skills are extremely helpful.

Dr. Nieto is considered by his colleagues as a “cornerstone” of the Equine Surgery Program and has provided an abundance of clinical expertise to a vast number of VMTH patients. He is an accomplished educator of DVM students and has mentored many residents during his time here. He works tirelessly on the Equine Emergency Surgery Service providing excellent care to the patients. He is an extremely proficient surgeon. Dr. Nieto goes above and beyond with regard to resident and student teaching; helping to shape many of the leaders of our profession. Whether a resident is on his service or on a different service he is always available to give advice or assistance. He is respectful and collegial to everyone at the clinic and is one of the most popular clinicians among the support staff and residents as a result. In conclusion, Dr. Nieto has contributed considerably to the teaching, research and service missions of the VMTH.
