March 23, 2007 (San Diego, CA) – The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine is proud to announce a new resource for pets, clients and veterinarians in Southern California, The WALTHAM UC Veterinary Medical Center - San Diego Clinical Nutrition Program. Clinical nutrition is the newest specialty service to be provided at the UC Veterinary Medical Center-San Diego (UCVMC-SD), an outreach program of the School of Veterinary Medicine.

At the newly opened center, highly trained veterinary nutritionists offer:

* Recommendations for commercial or formulated home-prepared diets to treat diseases that have a nutritional foundation or require dietary intervention

* Individualized weight-loss and weight-management regimens and follow-up care

* Parenteral nutrition formulations

* Nutritional support and consulting on feeding strategies for critically ill animals

* On-site appointments and remote consulting services

Enabled through a gift from Mars, Incorporated, WALTHAM, the science behind Mars Pet Care brands such as Royal Canin, Pedigree and Whiskas, has partnered with the School of Veterinary Medicine to provide start up support to establish this initiative at the UCVMC-SD and secure its success into the future.

"Initiation of the UCVMC-SD/Waltham Clinical Nutrition Service Program will provide a unique opportunity to bring advanced nutrition for the maintenance of health and function to the care of companion animals," said Dr. Catherine Woteki, Global Director of Scientific Affairs for Mars, Incorporated.

The founding of the WALTHAM UCVMC-SD Clinical Nutrition Program extends the school's highly-regarded nutrition program in Davis. Both the Davis and San Diego based programs are led by Associate Professor Andrea Fascetti, a board-certified veterinary internist and veterinary nutritionist. The San Diego activities complement the Nutrition Support Service at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and the components of research, veterinary instruction, student clinical training and a specialty residency in clinical nutrition established at Davis. Veterinarians throughout the country will be able to consult with this Nutrition Service.

Dr. Fascetti explains, "As we make these services available for the first time in Southern California, our long-term goal is to raise awareness of the vital role of nutrition in animal health."

The UCVMC - SD, launched in 1998, fills a growing need for veterinary services in the Southern California region by providing specialty care not currently present at local veterinary clinics, including kidney hemodialysis, behavior and veterinary pharmacy services.

For over 90 years, Mars, Incorporated has been a global provider of high-quality snack, food, petcare and health foods, creating some of the world’s best-loved brands including M&M'S®, SNICKERS®, MILKY WAY®, UNCLE BEN'S®, PEDIGREE®, WHISKAS®, SHEBA® and SEEDS OF CHANGE®.
