American College of Veterinary Surgeons Elects Amy Kapatkin Regent

Rockville, MD, December 5, 2007 - The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) announced the election results for a new President-Elect and two new Regents at its recent ACVS Veterinary Symposium in Chicago, IL.

Each year at the ACVS’ Annual Business Meeting, held in conjunction with the Symposium, the new members on the Board of Regents are installed. This year the President-Elect is Steven C. Budsberg, DVM, MS, University of Georgia, Athens, GA; the Small Animal Regent is Amy Kapatkin, DVM, MS, University of California-Davis, Davis, CA; and the Large Animal Regent is Rolf Embertson, DVM, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Lexington, KY.

Dr. Budsberg, specializing in small animal veterinary surgery, attended veterinary school at Washington State University and did his surgery residency at Michigan State University. He served on the ACVS Board of Regents from 2005-07; Publications Committee as Board Liaison (2005-07); Research Committee (2005 and Board Liaison 2006-07); and Symposium Committee (1993-1997).

Gregorio Araneta University is where Dr. Kapatkin attended veterinary school. She did her residency at The Animal Medical Center. Her specialty is small animal veterinary surgery, and she has served on the Annual Meeting Committee (1999). In her new capacity she also serves as Board Liaison to the Public Relations Committee.

Specializing in large animal surgery, Dr. Embertson completed his residency at the University of Florida and attended veterinary school at Michigan State University. He has served on the Annual Meeting Committee (1999) and the Examination Committee (1994-1995 and Chair 1996). As Regent, he also serves as the Large Animal Board Liaison to the Examination Committee.

Prior to the ACVS Symposium, the Nominating Committee submits a proposed slate of candidates to the ACVS Board of Regents for approval. The approved slate is forwarded to the membership for a vote. The nominee receiving the most votes is elected to the respective position and installed in office at the Annual Business Meeting.
