Tuesday, March 31, at 12:30 p.m. at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis Police Department and the Western States Police Canine Association will  rededicate the Faithful Partner monument  honoring the California police dogs that died in the line of duty between August 2002 and February 2009.

UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is proud to be the official home of the Faithful Partner monument. Originally dedicated in 2002, the memorial recognizes the bonds of service and affection between a K-9 officer and handler. The monument displays 23 plaques honoring dogs that lost their lives while serving our state between 1960 and 2002.

On March 31, the names of at least 11 dogs from law enforcement agencies across the state will be added to the original list.
These are dogs that died while deployed as a result of a criminal act.

K-9 police officers and their handlers from a variety of California law enforcement agencies will be present. Veterinary students and faculty members will also attend.

The monument, paid for by an anonymous donor to the veterinary school, was created by sculptor Susan Bahary and features a life-sized bronze statue of a German shepherd. The statue is located on the UC Davis campus in the Health Sciences District between Valley and Schalm halls. The Western States Police Canine Association are responsible for identifying future honorees and adding names to the monument, while veterinary students regularly clean and polish the statue at the site.

Veterinarians at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital have treated several injured police dogs over the years, including Saxon, a Fresno police dog shot by a suspect, and Taz, injured in Sacramento when he jumped a fence to follow a fleeing suspect.

For K-9 officer handlers: To add a "Faithful Partner" in time for this event, an application must be received by February 29, 2009. A contribution of $50.00 to the Western States Canine Police Association to help cover the cost of the memorial plaque is appreciated. Please submit application to Lt. Nader Oweis, UC Davis Police Department, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616. You may fax the application to 916.734.7871.
