To save animal lives and reduce pet overpopulation, the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is again joining veterinarians and other members of the community for Spay Day 2011.

Clients with appointments will bring their pets March 5 to the school for examinations and an overnight spay. Procedures and discharges will take place Sunday, March 6.

Volunteer veterinary faculty, staff and students will perform spay and neuter procedures on about 75 animals, primarily large dogs, as part of a national effort coordinated locally by the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition. Most of the clinicians are based at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, where they care for more than 30,000 animals each year while teaching veterinary students essential clinical skills and training resident veterinarians in 32 specialties. The students attend to the animals, assist with procedures and learn about anesthesia/recovery, surgical techniques and patient management.

The event helps low-income pet owners protect their animals' health and well-being while reducing pet overpopulation. Preventing unwanted litters eases overcrowding at local shelters, saves the lives of healthy animals, and protects against illness or injury of abandoned pets.

APPOINTMENTS

Appointment requests can be made at http://www.sacanimal.org/. The Coalition handles all appointments for the procedures, which are available for pets from households with annual incomes of less than $35,000.

The procedures take place in the Ira M. Gourley Clinical Teaching Center, where School of Veterinary Medicine students learn techniques of surgery, anesthesia and patient management. The facility is equipped with a suite of 28 surgery tables, anesthesia room, recovery area, classrooms and kennels. Since 2004, volunteer faculty members, staff and veterinary students have transformed the center into a large-scale community veterinary clinic to spay and neuter dozens of dogs on Spay Day.
