UC Davis K-9 Officer Charlie will be featured at the Labor Day Doggy Dash 5K in Davis’ Central Park.

The UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital will sponsor the Doggy Dash 5K road race as part of the Golden Valley Harriers’ Labor Day Races. The event—to be held at 7:45 a.m. in Davis’ Central Park on September 7, 2015—will provide a rare opportunity for both serious and recreational road racers to run a 5K with their dog. Participants are also welcome to walk the 5K with their dog.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Faithful Partner Fund at the UC Davis veterinary hospital. The fund was established earlier this year with matching donations from both UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine and Police Department to assist with the medical costs of treating K-9 officers, as well as search and rescue dogs, wounded or injured in the line of duty. The UC Davis veterinary hospital has a long history of caring for K-9 officers, having treated 65 police dogs in the past four years, and offering free annual teeth and eye examinations for K-9s.

Featured in Central Park following the race will be K-9 demonstrations by officers from the UC Davis Police Department and other local units, including UC Davis K-9 Officer Charlie, a 3-year-old black Labrador mix, that can detect numerous types of explosives and also locate evidence left behind at crime scenes. Charlie assists the UC Davis Police Department at large campus and dignitary events to enhance security. He also supports the Yolo County Bomb Squad as needed.

Also featured in Central Park that day will be:
•    UC Davis veterinarians and students answering animal health questions and providing animal care tips
•    UC Davis veterinary hospital information booth with children’s activities and games, as well as many free giveaways
•    Several other animal and health-related vendor booths
•    Food trucks
•    Live music
•    Health and fitness expo
•    Musical performance by citizens of Davis’ sister city of Inuyama, Japan

In addition to the Doggy Dash, the Labor Day Races will feature a 5K (8:45 a.m.), 10K (8:45 a.m.) and a 1K Kids Fun Run (10:30 a.m.). High school aged runners from Davis’ sister city of Inuyama, Japan will participate in the 5K and 10K, having qualified for the trip with race victories in Japan.
