Condors

A Critically Endangered Species Continues to Face Obstacles

photo of condor in sun by Daniel Bianchetta. Used by permission. The California Department of Fish and Game's Wildlife Branch requested that the Wildlife Health Center conduct a critical and objective review of pertinent literature on the topic of lead toxicity in raptors, with special emphasis on the California condor. The recovery of the endangered California condor has been difficult due to many factors, including morbidity and mortality from lead intoxication. The Wildlife Health Center prepared a comprehensive report intended to provide information for the CDFG to base recommendations to the California Fish and Game Commission on the persistence of lead in the environment within the condor range.
