The Atlantic oyster drill was accidentally introduced to the West Coast with the intentional introduction of the Atlantic oyster (Crassostrea virginica). It eats gastropods and other bivalves and is one of the most voracious predators of the common eastern oyster. It feeds by secreting a chemical to soften the shell of its prey and then uses its radula to drill a hole through the shell. It then inserts a tube into the hole to suck out the soft meat of the oyster. Photo Eric Zabel courtesy of Emily Carrington. |
