Boring Sponge (Cliona spp. )

The boring sponge can be found in the Eastern Pacific from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. The sponge bores into mollusk shells, and can be a serious pest for cultured oysters. On a more positive note, these sponges are beneficial because they are able to erode mollusk shells and recycle the calcium into a form that is usable by other marine organisms.
