The Pacific oyster, also called the Giant Pacific Oyster, Japanese Oyster, or the Miyaqi Oyster, was introduced from Japan in 1922. It has spread throughout the inland waters and can be commonly found in the inter-tidal zone living on rocks, mud, sand, or gravel. It reproduces naturally and is commercially cultured. It is an important food source and is harvested recreationally and commercially throughout its range. The intentional importation of Pacific oysters also was responsible for the accidental introduction of the Japanese Littleneck or Manila Clam (Venerupis philippinarum), the Japanese Oyster Drill (Ceratostoma inornatum), and a brown algae (Sargassum muticum).
