The Aleutian Canada Goose is one of eleven currently recognized subspecies of the Canada goose. It can be distinguished from other subspecies of Canada geese by its small size and the presence of a complete white ring of feathers around the base of its neck. The Aleutian Canada Goose is a spring and fall migrant to the Puget Sound Georgia Basin marine ecosystem. It is an herbivore that forages primarily in mudflats, salt marshes, and estuaries. Population decline has been attributed to predation by the introduced arctic and red fox on this bird’s nesting grounds in the Aleutian Islands (Alaska). The Aleutian Canada Goose is currently Blue listed by British Columbia, listed as Threatened in Washington state, and listed as a Species of Concern by the United States Federal Government. For more information on the Aleutian Canada Goose please see the Washington state Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Status Report at http://www.wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/diversty/soc/status/cangoose/acgxsum.htm |
