The Cassin’s Auklet is a seabird that usually nests on offshore coastal islands by digging a burrow in the ground. These burrows make the Cassin’s Auklet sensitive to human disturbance because walking in colonies may cause nesting burrows to collapse. In addition, predation by introduced rat and raccoon populations on many of British Colombia’s islands has had a significant negative effect on Cassin’s Auklet populations. This bird primarily feeds on various crustaceans and small fish and is a year round resident of the Puget Sound Georgia Basin marine ecosystem. They are currently Blue listed by British Colombia, listed as Candidates in Washington state, and listed as a Species of Concern by the United States Federal Government.
