Coho spend approximately the first half of their life in streams and small freshwater tributaries before moving into estuarine and marine waters. Most adults are three-year-old fish, however, some precocious males known as "jacks" return as two-year-old spawners. In 2002, the Canadian Committee for the Status of Endangered Wildlife listed the interior Frasier river coho as endangered. The Puget Sound/ Strait of Georgia coho is a candidate for listing under the U.S. Federal ESA. For more information visit the NOAA Fisheries website on the Puget Sound/Strait of Georgia coho salmon. |
