Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus)

This bird, federally listed as a species of concern under the ESA, was recently reclassified by Washington state (April 2002) from endangered to sensitive. Nesting pairs of this bird of prey have risen from 5 in 1980 to 73 pairs in 2002 thanks to a nation-wide ban on the pesticide DDT that caused eggshell thinning, protection of nest sites, and captive propagation efforts. For more information and a Washington state status report on the species, see the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website.
