Northern / Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus)
PHOTO

The red-necked phalarope is usually a spring and fall migrant to the Puget Sound Georgia Basin marine ecosystem, where it feeds strictly on invertebrates. As with other phalaropes, the males tend to have a duller plumage than females. Also the males are responsible for incubating and raising the young. Although the overall population size is estimated to be small, more research is needed to better determine population numbers for this bird. Due to these estimated low population levels, British Columbia has Blue listed this bird.
