The purple martin (Progne subis), not classically viewed as a marine bird, utilizes primarily marine habitat in the inland waters of Washington and British Columbia. In British Columbia it is red listed and all of the known nesting pairs are in wooden nest boxes along marine shorelines. In Washington State the population nests primarily on Puget Sound shorelines and the lower Columbia River and is a candidate for listing.
