In 1997 School of Veterinary Medicine classmates Drs. Jim Clark and Steve Dana opened the doors of the Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of Marin. Dr. Dana had been working as an emergency clinician throughout the Bay Area, resided in Marin, and was President of the Marin County Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Clark provided distant support to the venture initially from his home in San Diego, where he had already developed a successful 24-hour emergency/specialty center in San Diego.
The center in Marin County grew rapidly with the addition of specialty services, which now includes internal medicine, surgery, and oncology. Along with a team of skilled specialists and experienced emergency clinicians, they provide Marin pet owners with high quality veterinary medical care. Drs. Dana and Clark have also been joined by two skilled partners, Dr. Chris Rodi and Dr. Peter Bowie.
“Our goal is to provide a local, high-quality, compassionate source for advanced pet care in the Marin community,” says Dr. Clark. “We have an amazing team of doctors and paraprofessionals who work hard to accomplish that. We also have a close relationship with our colleagues at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. In today’s world, providing the best level of care requires a collaborative approach involving a team of medical professionals.”
According to Dr. Clark, “Many of us earned our veterinary degrees at UC Davis and are grateful for the School of Veterinary Medicine’s ongoing leadership in research and education that benefits animals. The training and cutting-edge education we received provided an essential foundation for our ongoing learning. Since returning to teach part-time in the veterinary school at Davis, I am pleased to see that our school continues to provide a world class education.”
Dr. Dana emphasized that “My degrees from UC Davis in both Animal Physiology and Veterinary Medicine, a postgraduate internship emphasizing surgery and emergency/critical care, and additional clinical study in anesthesia at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Davis provided an exceptional basis for what has been a rich and very rewarding career. I feel extremely fortunate to have become a citizen of this profession these many years.” Dr. Dana currently coordinates the veterinary internship program at their facility.
Dr. Clark resides in Novato, California with his wife, two daughters, three dogs, and two cats. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family, travel, volunteer work, and hiking in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Dr. Dana, an avid sailor, is currently completing a course of study leading to a MS in Infectious Disease through the University of London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
