Behind the Scenes Tour

Schalm Lecture April 30, 2021

How do we discover new viruses, especially those that have an impact on animal health? In her lecture “Viral Discoveries: The Impact of Hidden Viruses,” pathologist Dr. Patricia Pesavento walks viewers through the process and shares her passion for virology. The process is not an easy one, but it is certainly a fascinating one. The Pesavento Laboratory at UC Davis has identified or collaborated to characterize nearly 30 novel viruses in the past 10 years. Today, Dr. Pesavento takes a deep dive into the discovery of amdoparvovirus in red pandas, an endangered species with fewer than 10,000 remaining on Earth.

Schalm Lecture May 1, 2021

In today’s second installment of the annual Schalm Lecture, Dr. Patricia Pesavento presents “Persistent Viruses: Potential Outcomes (What are we missing?).” The self-proclaimed “virus hunter” continues her love of virology with a presentation on how viruses are affecting animal health and what more can be done to discover the true negative impact of these viruses. You’ll find her hunt for the origin of a rare analogous tumor in West Coast raccoons to be fascinating.

Panel Discussion

Drs. Carrie Finno, Michael Kent, Joie Watson, and Jane Sykes, as well as DVM student Prathima Garudadri, join emcee Dr. Michael Lairmore to discuss how the pandemic affected the School of Veterinary Medicine, from research to clinical activities to student learning. Thankfully, the school was able to maintain its operations after adapting to new protocols. Support from donors, clients, and other constituents helped tremendously in our ability to be a consistent resource for our community.

Student Club Showcase
