Building a Vet Med Website
The first step is to consult with your client and understand their needs and desires for this site.
Once you are ready to start building you will need to make a duplicate site based on the Vet Med Template that can be found in the Aquia Site Factory.
https://www.ucdsitefarm.acsitefactory.com/
Add the site name prior to .ucdsitefarm.acsitefactory.com
This is not the final URL but the name you give that you will also share with the host clerk when you go to publish your site to a new domain name.
Select Full Site Clone. This will bring all assets over from the template.
Select Duplicate Site
It usually takes 30 min to an hour before a new site is created and you will be notified.
Add the correct logo and go to town.
Once you know what the final URL is going to be you will need to add that to the NEW site. Go into Aquia and go to your new site. Select the drop down menu and go to MANAGE DOMAINS
The add the final domain name into the ASSOCIATE DOMAIN field.
Once the site is ready to be published you will need to get the final domain name set up with the Campus Host Clerk as well as send our svmithelp Desk a ticket with the same information.
(the reason we need to send this to our local help desk is that in order for the new sites to show on our local DNS, we have to give permission there as well)
The full directions are located here: https://sitefarm.ucdavis.edu/training/all/publish-site-to-web Step #7 is crucial
Email the campus host clerk with your request @ [email protected]
This process is changed as of October 19th, 2020. CNAME now goes to sf.ucdavis.edu
Email [email protected]
Subject line: "Request for CNAME reassignment"
Body: "Dear Host Clerk,
Please make the following DNS change:
ourdept.ucdavis.edu CNAME sf.ucdavis.edu
(in this case, "ourdept" would be the name of the specific site you're building for example "groovylab.ucdavis.edu".
If there are any other DNS records for ourdept.ucdavis.edu, please remove them.
Please make this change at HH:MM on MONTH DAY.
Thank you."
Please DO NOT ask for a CNAME to ourdept.sf.ucdavis.edu or ourdept.ucdsitefarm.acsitefactory.com.
Our process has changed due to our move to the Fastly CDN service. Read more in our blog "SiteFarm gets even Fastly-er"
This email will generate a service ticket with the campus host clerk and they will either ask you clarifying questions or advise you when the work has been completed. It will take approximately 30 minutes to four hours for the change to show up online.
Setting us CAS Authentication for the site
In order to be able to log into the site using the site domain name/login, ie: yourdoman.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/login you will need to set up Cass authentication for your users.
You will need to have this set up by SVMIT and then you can go to: https://casmgr.ucdavis.edu/register/services
Simply duplicate what has been done and add your sites info.
Name would be Add (SITE NAME) to CAS
Then your URL is the service Url.
Usually takes them an hour to set it up
Linking to the new site
After your site is complete you will want to find all the places within the Vet Med world that would best link to the site.
- For Labs and Centers: https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/research/research-centers
- Department sites
- Faculty pages: see information on Faculty Pages (coming soon!)
Once the site is showing up both at the school as well as the rest of the world then you can celebrate for a moment before your next job begins. (and everyone shouted"hurrah!")
