[Specialties x Zoetis] Atopic Dermatitis and Infections: Pathogens and Pruritus

Event Date

Location
Valley Hall 1030

We will discuss the management of superficial bacterial folliculitis (SBF) and Malassezia dermatitis in dogs, emphasizing the importance of treating infections to control pruritus in atopic dogs. We will highlight that atopic dogs often suffer from skin barrier dysfunction, making them more susceptible to infections and that infections are a common flare factor in allergic patients. We will also outline the role of topical and systemic therapies in managing these infections, with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship. Additionally, we will discuss the need for proper diagnosis through cytology and bacterial culture to ensure effective treatment and prevent antimicrobial resistance.
