Professor Emeritus Dr. Joe P. Morgan Passes Away

The following is Dr. Morgan's obituary written by his family.

Dr. Joe P. Morgan died on May 31, 2026, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  After graduating from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1960, Dr. Morgan served as an AVMA Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1961.  He received an M.S. from Colorado State University in 1962 and was an NIH Fellow at the Royal Veterinary College in Stockholm, Sweden from 1964 until 1967, where he successfully defended his Vet. Med. Dr. dissertation.

After serving at Colorado State University as an associate professor, 1967-1968, Dr. Morgan joined the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1969 as full professor.  He led the Department of Clinical Sciences until 1971, the Department of Radiological Sciences from 1971 to 1976, and served as Chief of the Radiology Service at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital until 1979.  He became professor emeritus in 1993.  

Dr. Morgan continued research and education at several international institutions for over two decades, including Universität Zürich, Ross University, and St. George’s University.  His research and scholarship is documented in over 200 publications, including 14 books.  His renowned title, Techniques in Veterinary Radiography, sold over 40,000 copies over 5 editions, and was translated into several languages.  

Joe P. Morgan is survived by his 6 loving children, 20 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren and several children- and grand-children-in-law including Daniel Scholl, DVM MPVM PhD (UCD ‘87), Brookings, South Dakota.
