UC Davis Exotics Specialist Wins International Avian Practitioner of the Year Award
Dr. David Guzman, chief of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s (VMTH) Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service, was recently named the T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year. Dr. Guzman was presented the award this past weekend at the 47th Annual Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) Conference & Expo in Austin, Texas. Dr. Ted Lafeber III gave a presentation of Dr. Guzman's background and career at the event.
Beyond many avian species of companion birds served in the VMTH, Dr. Guzman routinely cares for free-ranging birds of prey at the veterinary school’s California Raptor Center, as well as avian species from a small zoological collection.
The T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner Award is presented to an outstanding veterinarian who is advancing the quality of health care for companion and/or free-ranging birds. Award recipients are selected by an independent committee of members from the AAV, which has over 1,900 members worldwide. Selection of recipients is based on clinical excellence, innovation, promotion of the profession, significant contributions to the knowledge base, and caring and compassion to their avian patients and clients.
Other UC Davis recipients of the award include Drs. Michelle Hawkins (2023) and Joanne Paul-Murphy (2014).
