Three UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine faculty members were recently honored by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Drs. Linda Lowenstine and James MacLachlan were recognized as a distinguished members, while Dr. H. L. Shivraprasad was recognized as an honorary member. 

Lowenstine served as professor of Veterinary Pathology at UC Davis, Pathology Veterinary Advisor, and the Principal Pathologist for the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project.

She completed her undergraduate education at Standard University and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. She went on to further complete both her DVM and Ph.D. in comparative pathology from UC Davis.

Lowenstine helped to establish the acclaimed UC Davis – San Diego Zoo pathology and residency program while also organizing enriching workshops and offering opportunies to young pathologists in order to gain valuable experience to present scientific findings. She then joined UC Davis as part of the veterinary school’s faculty in 1981. She is now a professor emeritus.

MacLachlan served as professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology with expertise in both pathology and pathogenesis.

He received his BVSc (1975) in Veterinary Medicine at Massey University in New Zealand. He continued his education by receiving a M.S. in Virology (1979) at the University of Missouri, Columbia and a Ph.D. in Comparative Pathology (1982) at UC Davis. MacLachlan has also received a long list of honors and awards including the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award and the Sir Arnold Theiler Memorial Lecture, University of Pretoria, South Africa (2012). 

MacLachlan studies viral diseases such as the emerging bluetongue and African horse sickness that are transmitted by Culicoides biting midges. He serves as an expert advisor for numerous organizations such as the World Organization for Animal Health, the United States Department of Agriculture and Homeland Security, and the European Union.

Shivraprasad is a professor in the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System with a specialty focus in Avian Pathology. After receiving his DVM of Veterinary Science (1969) at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, India, he went on to receive his M.S. and Ph.D. (1975) and (1977) in Physiology and Genetics at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and later obtained an M.S. (1980) in Veterinary Pathology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Shivraprasad has a long list of both honors and awards ranging from the Merit Scholarship to the Journal of Pathology: Best Paper.
