Counseling Services
The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine greatly values the mental health and wellness of our students. Our mental health counselors are dedicated to providing quality, confidential care to our professional DVM students to help foster their personal and professional growth and success.
Counseling Services
The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) and UC Davis central campus Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) offer free (for registered VETMED students; no insurance required), confidential, and accessible counseling services. The School of Veterinary Medicine provides counseling services on the vet med campus to assist in making appointments as convenient as possible. The SVM Counseling & Wellness Suite is located at 172 Schalm Hall.
If students need more frequent or longer-term services, referrals can be provided to work with a counselor in the surrounding community. These services are accessible by using your SHIP insurance plan, private insurance, or private pay.
Individual and couples therapy services are available 5 days a week with a wide range of appointment times to accommodate VETMED student availability: early-morning, noon appointments, and early-evening appointments. (see Making an Appointment section below)
*Drop-in hours are available Monday through Friday from 1pm - 2 pm for students, faculty, and staff. Drop-in hours can be used to obtain information about counseling services for VETMED students, to request information on methods for helping a colleague/friend who may be in need of mental health assistance, or making requests for specific trainings or programming for a class, club, or other organization on campus.
*Group therapy services are provided on the VETMED campus to support DVM students.
Live Health Online counseling or medical appointments are offered through a partnership between UC Davis Student Health and Counseling Services and LiveHealth Online. Services are available to UC SHIP enrolled students at no cost. LiveHealth Online providers are available throughout the United States. Enter the state you are currently residing in when scheduling an appointment to see a list of providers available in that area.
Psycho-education and Wellness Programming are provided when requested by students, faculty, and staff. Examples of programming include stress and wellness presentations, methods for recognizing and responding to students in distress, and methods for communicating effectively with colleagues and supervisors in a professional setting.
