UC Davis Opens New Equine Stalls in Hospital

The UC Davis veterinary hospital’s Large Animal Clinic (LAC) celebrated the grand opening of new clinical space in its equine barns. LAC Director Dr. Bret McNabb and several faculty and staff members recently cut the ceremonial ribbon into new hospitalization space of three large-capacity equine stalls and an adjacent treatment area.

The new space repurposes an area of the hospital that had not been utilized in more than a decade and paves the way for future renovation projects to move forward, including the All Species Imaging Center (ASIC), a central hub of imaging modalities which will be located between the main hospital building and the barns.

The three stalls are larger than the hospital’s typical horse stalls and are meant to accommodate several different scenarios:
•    A mare and foal needed to be housed together
•    A mare on “foal watch”
•    Larger hospitalized horses such as draft horses and Clydesdales

The new treatment area is equipped with a set of stocks and workspace for clinicians and technicians. By being able to treat hospitalized horses from the adjacent stalls in this treatment area, instead of transporting them to other examination rooms in the barn, the new space will increase efficiency throughout the hospital.

These new stalls, the ASIC, and future projects such as the Equine Performance and Rehabilitation Center are part of the Veterinary Medical Center campaign, which is transforming the future of veterinary care at UC Davis.
