The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Mison has been named Associate Dean for Veterinary Medical Center Operations/Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO) of the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), effective March 1, 2024. Dr. Mison, a board-certified surgeon, will also serve as a professor in the hospital’s Soft Tissue Surgery Service.

As CVMO, Dr. Mison oversees all clinical, administrative, and fiscal operations of the VMTH, one of the largest and most comprehensive veterinary hospitals in the world. He leads a team of more than 125 faculty members who ensure the academic quality of the clinical learning environment for DVM students and house officers (residents, interns, fellows). Dr. Mison also coordinates with hospital leadership to hold the ethical and professional conduct of the more than 750 VMTH specially trained technicians and other staff members to the highest standard. He reports directly to school dean Dr. Mark Stetter.

“Dr. Mison is a committed surgeon and talented administrator who believes that a positive and supportive work environment enhances patient care and benefits all involved – the animals, clients, staff, students, and faculty,” said Dean Stetter. “He continuously works to improve culture and ensure the well-being of those working in the hospital. We are fortunate to have Dr. Mison joining us, and we look forward to his success.”

The VMTH cares for more than 50,000 patients a year. The hospital operates both Small and Large Animal Clinics, providing care and training in more than 35 specialty disciplines. Its house officer training program is the largest of any veterinary hospital in the world and draws participants from nearly every state and dozens of countries. The VMTH is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the only organization to accredit companion animal veterinary hospitals. Less than 15% of veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada achieve AAHA accreditation.

“The VMTH provides world-class clinical services and fosters a workplace where people are proud and inspired to be their best,” said Dr. Mison. “My passion for veterinary medicine and dedication to excellence motivates me to contribute to UC Davis’ legacy of greatness. I am honored and thrilled to be selected for this role.”

Dr. Mison previously served as the Associate Dean for Clinical Services—Small Animal Operations and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida. He has previous experience as Hospital Director at the University of Pennsylvania and has owned a private multi-specialty practice in Washington State. Dr. Mison earned his DVM from the University of Florida and completed his rotating internship and surgical residency at Michigan State University. Throughout his career, he has received additional leadership training through the Wharton Business School and the Harvard Extension School Professional Development Program.
