This lecture will focus on the history of the various LGBTQ+ affinity groups, student chapters and individual leaders within the veterinary profession. We will review the Association of Gay Veterinarians (AG Vets) in 1977, the Lesbian and Gay Veterinary Medical Association (LGVMA) in 1992, and the current Pride Veterinary Medical Community (PrideVMC). Using gender, discrimination, ally-ship, self-empowerment and the AIDS pandemic, we will see how we created networks and collaborations that helped guide veterinary medicine to be more inclusive and supportive of LGBTQ+ people and other identities.
