Dr. Eugene Breznock, a long-time faculty member of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, passed away on August 22, 2024, at the age of 81.

Dr. Breznock joined the UC Davis faculty in 1973 as a small animal surgeon. He was well known in the veterinary world for his innovative liver shunt and cardiac surgeries. He remained at the university until his retirement in 1998.

Following retirement as a professor, he pursued a second career in the private sector. He and his wife Ann, also a veterinarian, co-founded BioSurg, Inc., a medical device research company focused on improving the lives of animals. Many devices tested by BioSurg received FDA approval and are still being used in hospitals around the world, including stents, pacemakers, and valves.

A native of Ohio, Dr. Breznock graduated from St. Edwards High School in Lakewood, Ohio in 1961. He earned a bachelor’s degree from John Carrol University (where he played football), a master’s degree from the University of Georgia, and PhD and DVM degrees from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Breznock is survived by his wife Dr. Ann Breznock, daughter Nicole Williams (Jason), son Adam Breznock (Nicole), three grandsons, and several other extended family members.
