Research Focus
My research is focused on airways epithelial and inflammatory/immune cell interaction. Interaction of these cells maintains homeostasis (ability to combat infectious disease, removal and/or repair of injured cells) in the lung. My laboratory is interested in asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and chronic obstructive lung disease as models for investigation. My current investigations are in the asthma model and its exacerbation by the oxidant air pollutant ozone. I am investigating how perturbation of the airway and parenchymal epithelium influences remodeling of the underlying interstitium which in turn influences the epithelium in an interactive epithelial-mesenchymal trophic unit (EMTU). My goal is to define the critical cytokines produced by the epithelium required to maintain homeostasis in the EMTU and prevent airways and parenchymal remodeling that lead to altered lung function.
