Safety and Vigilance at the School

Dear SVM Community,

The violent attacks in Davis over the past five days are distressing and feel very personal. They involved a UC Davis undergraduate student as well as vulnerable members of our community. One of the victims, David Breaux, focused his life on advancing compassion—a trait that is core to our profession. We deeply mourn the loss of these innocent people.

Our first priority is your safety. Campus leadership has been working with local authorities to help address safety concerns.  To that end, please read Chancellor May’s most recent email and stay current on safety information and resources by clicking the banner links provided on the home pages for both the school and campus websites.

We have worked with campus to ensure that there are extra patrols both in the main veterinary medicine campus areas, as well as in outer locations, such as south of I-80. Dr. Stern sent an email earlier regarding safety measures at the hospital–you can read it here.

If you see anything unusual or suspicious, please report it immediately. For convenience, I’ve put the police contact information at the bottom of this email. Please keep your safety the utmost priority. Do not hesitate to ask classmates or colleagues for help staying safe, such as to ensure that you are not walking alone.

Please take care,

Mark
