UC Davis Ranked Third for Hispanic Graduates in Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences

Adapted from the Hispanic Outlook magazine news release:

UC Davis received a #3 ranking from Hispanic Outlook magazine for top schools for Hispanics in graduate STEM programs in the category Agricultural/Animal/Plant/Veterinary Science and related fields. The assessed data includes DVM (doctor of veterinary medicine) and graduate students in the School of Veterinary Medicine, and graduate students in the Colleges of Biological Sciences and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

This is the first time that the magazine has presented the top schools for Hispanics/Latinos in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) across the nation, based on the number of graduate degrees granted to Hispanics/Latinos in eight key STEM fields using 2019-20 data from the National Center for Education Statistic’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System.

Careers in STEM are increasingly valued and sought after by students and employers alike, given their growing importance for solving 21st century issues ranging from environmental conservation and food security to global health challenges and our growing dependence on internet technology and artificial intelligence, among other issues.

The data presented by Hispanic Outlook highlights the work that remains to be done to increase the presence of Hispanic/Latino students in graduate STEM programs, as they still represent a small proportion of all graduate students obtaining degrees in these fields.

In addition, the data shows that there are more Latina women than men in Agricultural/Animal/Plant/Veterinary Sciences, indicating that Hispanic/Latino men especially need to be actively recruited for these areas.
