The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Journals recognized the recipients of the Journal of AVMA (JAVMA) Awards and American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR) Awards during 2023 AVMA annual convention, held recently in Denver. Dr. Ching Ching Shirley Kot, a resident with the UC Davis veterinary hospital's Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service, was named the recipient of the 2023 Outstanding AJVR Resident Manuscript Award.

Dr. Kot was selected for her co-authoring of the manuscript "Biomechanical evaluation of locking vs. non-locking 2.0-mm malleable L-miniplate fixation of simulated caudal mandibular fractures in cats." Joining her on the publication were SVM faculty members Drs. Frank Verstraete, Susan Stover, and co-author Boaz Arzi, as well as research engineer Tanya Garcia.

Student, intern, and resident authors of manuscripts whose work was judged as exceptional by the Associate Editor Board’s Awards Committee each received a certificate of achievement and a $500 award. The awards are only in their second year, and a UC Davis resident has won the Outstanding AJVR Resident Manuscript Award both years.

Dr. Kot also won the Outstanding Small Animal Research Study and Presentation Award for the same research at the 2023 UC Davis Gerald V. Ling Veterinary Intern and Resident Research Symposium.
