Resident Training in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology - Standard Pathology Track

Salary: $52,291/1st year; $54,729/2nd year; $57,256/3rd year

Qualifications & Requirements for Admission to the Program: Qualifications for admission include a DVM (or equivalent degree) from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA (preferred) and a scholastic record sufficient for acceptance into graduate school (a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate and veterinary school courses). Although resident applicants do not apply to graduate school at the time of application to the residency, we give preference to residents who are qualified to continue their advanced training in a post-doctoral degree program. GRE scores can be included by are not required for application to residency program.
Description: This position is a three year position intended for persons planning to sit for the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP). Residency training in anatomic pathology is suitable for persons with limited or no post-DVM experience in pathology. Training consists of two years at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital developing basic skills in morphologic pathology and acquiring a fundamental understanding of the pathogenesis of diseases via rotating assignments to pathology services under the guidance of board certified (ACVP or ECVP) veterinary pathologists. Residents gain experience in anatomic pathology through gross and microscopic examination of a diversity of pathology cases from the necropsy/biopsy services of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital including companion animals, equine, exotic hoofstock, food animals, laboratory animals, and a variety of wild and exotic species. The Anatomic Pathology Service at the VMTH has approximately 1800 biopsies and 1400 necropsies a year, of which approximately 15% are zoo and wild animal or exotic pet cases. During the third year, the now Senior Resident works closely with the Chief of Service and Service Manager to ensure that all Service activities are completed in a timely and thorough manner. The Senior Resident takes rotating assignments on the biopsy and necropsy services under the guidance of board certified (ACVP and ECVP) pathologists. The Senior Resident also provides mentorship for first and second year residents. This position serves as the liaison between clinical faculty, house officers and the Service, represents the Anatomic Pathology Service at hospital clinical rounds and provides consultations for clinicians. The Senior Resident position is designed for persons intending to take the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) and to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Integrative Pathobiology.

Scoring of applications: All applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 1) overall academic achievement, 2) academic achievement in pathology and related subjects, 3) clarity of career goals (letter of intent), 4) the promise of a successful career in veterinary pathology, 5) experience and interest in teaching and research including pursuit of a Masters or PhD degree, 6) interest in an academic career, 7) foreign applicants will also be evaluated based on their evidence of excellence in written and spoken English.
