About the Fellowship
The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis is offering a one-year fellowship in large animal neurology with equine emphasis. This program provides advanced training in large animal neurology with foundations of functional neuroanatomy in small and large animal species, electrophysiology, clinical and anatomical pathology, and advanced imaging.
The fellow will perform rotations in small and large animal neurology. The neurology/neurosurgery service at our hospital consists of 9 faculty board-certified neurologists and 8 neurology residents.
Potential candidates:
Recruitment will be opened from the time of this announcement until a candidate is identified. After selection of potential candidate(s), an interview (via zoom or preferably in person) will be performed. The successful candidate will start on August 1, 2026 or as soon as possible.
The successful fellow will be expected to embrace the role as an Ambassador for the Large Animal Clinic and support efforts to enhance the reputation of our teaching hospital.
Overview of the fellowship:
This is a 1-year program with possibility of 1-year extension upon satisfactory performance on which the fellow will acquire advanced knowledge in neurology. The fellow will have 10 months of clinical activity and 24 days of vacation. The remaining time will be allocated for professional development, and other scholarly activities including clinical research.
The fellow will perform structured rotations in small animal neurology which include whole week rotations for 20% of the 10 months of clinical rotations under the supervision of board-certified neurologists. Rotations in small animal neurology are essential to provide the foundation of functional neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and advanced diagnostic modalities with the goal of having translational application to large animal species. In addition, the fellow will attend daily rounds, journal club, histopathology rounds, and electrodiagnostic rounds in small animal neurology while on rotation. The fellow will perform clinical rotations in large animal neurology under the supervision of Dr. Aleman for appointments or consults in several species (equine, livestock, exotics) for the rest of the 10 months (80%) and will attend rounds. The fellow will also attend to structured lectures in large animal neurology led by Dr. Aleman.
Clinical research will be conducted under the guidance of Dr. Aleman with the expectation of presentation at the UC Daivs Veterinary Intern and Resident Research Symposium (VIRRS) and eventual publication in a peer-reviewed refereed journal.
