On-line Certificate Training Program

School CommitmentOn-line Certificate Training Program

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has partnered with the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) to advance diversity and inclusion in the veterinary profession – the Center for Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine.

The Center offers virtual resources and on-line certificate training programs designed to provide veterinary students, professionals and support staff with the skills they need to be successful in an increasingly diverse world. Current programs focus on skills in:

  • Communication
  • Leadership
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Cultural Competency

School Commitment

To meet the needs of our increasingly diverse society, Dean Lairmore committed funding for the registration fee to accommodate ten faculty and ten students this year. Program participants will complete a series of learning modules, as well as community engagement and cultural experiences, to enhance their skill in navigating the diversity of generations, sexual orientation, ability, gender, race and ethnicity. Certificates and nine hours of continuing education credit are awarded upon program completion. Participants have up to one year to complete the program.

This new Center, and the certificate programs, administered by Purdue will help fulfill one of the key recommendations of the 2011 North American Veterinary Medical Education Consortium (NAVMEC) report, which emphasized that intercultural awareness was a core competency that all veterinarians should possess because culture and belief systems impact delivery of veterinary medical care.

Further information on the Center and certificate programs can be found at: www.vet.purdue.edu/humancenteredvetmed

If interested in enrolling in the certificate program, please contact Brandy McCall for registration and application information at bpmccall@ucdavis.edu.  Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first- served basis.
