Congratulations to the Class of 2024 who received their degrees from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in its 74th Commencement Ceremony held at the Mondavi Center on May 24th. Among those graduating were 145 DVM students, 31 residents and 17 students in the Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine program.
Dr. Allison O'Donnell is familiar with the UC Davis veterinary hospital, having received her veterinary degree from the school in 2023. Unfortunately, she and fiancé Matt Cardinale had to experience the hospital as clients recently when their dog Squid, a 5-year-old female husky/terrier mix, was trapped in a house fire and suffered carbon monoxide poisoning.
Dr. Sam Barringer (DVM ’91) was named the 2023 Consultant of the Year by the Academy of Veterinary Consultants (AVC), a national organization of livestock practitioners who provide high quality continuing education on topics related to livestock health.
The AAVMC hosted the day-long Spectrum of Care Symposium, sponsored by the Stanton Foundation, on Thursday, April 11th, 2024, as part of the AAVMC annual Catalyze Conference in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the symposium was to support CVMs interested in implementing the SOC Education Model into their curricula.
Dr. Kimberly Dodd, DVM, PhD, MS has been recommended to serve as the new dean of MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, effective August 1. Pending board approval, she will succeed Doug Freeman, who has served as interim dean since April 2023.
Dr. Dexter Onuoraegbunem Chukwuneke Atuora, a proud alumnus of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 3rd, 2024, at the age of 85.

The American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM) recently performed an on-site visit at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and granted full certification to two livestock residency programs. Veterinarians completing three-year residencies in Livestock Herd Health and Reproduction (LHHR) and Dairy Production Medicine (DPM) are now recognized by ACVPM for attaining eligibility to take their certifying examinations at the conclusion of their programs to become board certified in preventive veterinary medicine.
The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine will close its 75th anniversary year with a gala on June 29, 2024, at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. With a Western theme that guests can hang their hats and spurs on, the gala will raise funds for scholarships, nurturing the next generation of veterinary leaders.
Olympic champion figure skater and animal owner Brian Boitano will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event.
