Small Animal Infectious Disease Fellowship

Judith McBean Trust Foundation Fellowship in Small Animal Infectious Disease

The Clinical Infectious Diseases fellowship program at the University of California, Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is the first program of its kind worldwide to offer advanced infectious disease training for board-eligible or board-certified small animal internal medicine specialists. In recognition of support from a generous donor, we are excited to again be able to offer a 2-year training program commencing in 2023 for a Judith McBean Trust Foundation Fellow in Small Animal Infectious Diseases.

This University of California, Davis VMTH has one of the highest small animal caseloads in the country. Applicants should be prepared for two demanding and intense years that consist of case management on the internal medicine service, multiple consultations per day from house officers and faculty clinicians throughout the hospital and from referring veterinarians, rotations through the clinical microbiology laboratory, research and study. The consultation service sees a variety of animals with infectious disease complications (viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal and parasitic) that result from shelter housing/overpopulation, vector exposure, surgery, immunosuppressive drug therapy, and other causes of immunosuppression. The fellow will also attend journal club and weekly case conference at the University of California, Davis Medical Center. The trainee will be mentored by a team of board-certified internal medicine specialists with interests in companion animal infectious diseases: Dr. Jane Sykes, Dr. Jonathan Dear, and Dr. Krystle Reagan. In addition, the fellow will join one of the largest teams of internal medicine specialists and house officers in an academic veterinary setting worldwide and have access to faculty in a full array of specialty disciplines.
