The Comparative Pathology Laboratory (CPL) and the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) at UC Davis offer a one-year Fellowship or Senior Residency in laboratory animal and comparative pathology for trainees who seek to specialize in this area of high demand. During this year, the trainee will spend 6 months at the CNPRC and 6 months at the CPL.
The CPL is a high-throughput laboratory animal diagnostic laboratory and research pathology resource, serving the university and external scientific community by providing pathology support for basic and translational research and fulfilling the clinical and health surveillance requirements inherent to the use of animals in research. There are approximately 2000 submissions per year from a variety of laboratory animal species (predominantly rodent). The caseload will include clinical diagnostics, investigative and pre-clinical studies involving semi-quantitative analyses and phenotyping of genetically engineered mice.
The CNPRC Pathology Service provides diagnostic and research support for the breeding colonies, rhesus macaques and titi monkeys, and research groups both within and outside the CNPRC. There are approximately 1200 necropsy and biopsy submissions per year from the diagnostic cases and research projects.
The trainee will act as primary case coordinator for all clinical case submissions, which includes gross necropsy, tissue trimming, ancillary sample collection and assay evaluation, data interpretation, report generation, and client communication. The trainee will have access to fully-equipped clinical pathology and molecular diagnostic laboratories at each facility. Scientific collaboration and publication are encouraged. Supervision from board-certified faculty pathologists and support from experienced technical staff will be provided at all times.
Additionally, the trainee will participate/present at CPL/CNPRC/Stanford University tri-institutional Laboratory Animal Pathology rounds and other relevant rounds/seminars (i.e. CNPRC Virtual slide conference), and will have access to departmental seminars and rounds at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for board preparation, as needed. The trainee will assist in teaching veterinary medical students and lab animal medicine residents during dedicated rotations.
The successful applicant must possess a doctor of veterinary medicine from an American Veterinary Medical Association–accredited or equivalent institution and have at least two years of formal anatomic pathology training (a residency). Post-residency boarded-certified or eligible applicants are most welcome. Salary is based on the current UC Davis VMTH senior resident (3rd year) pay scale.
