Research Focus
My research focus in on the elucidation of the viral genetic factors associated with the emergence of arboviral diseases. These research efforts are performed through a combination of reverse genetic, bioinformatic, molecular evolutionary and selection modeling methodologies for the identification of viral genetic factors that augment vector infectivity and transmission as well as altered vertebrate host competence and pathogenic potential of arboviruses.
Specialty Focus
My research efforts have focused largely on alphavirus and flavivirus emergence mechanisms. Specifically, my lab has focused on the viral genetic factors associated with increased replicative capacity of West Nile virus in avian hosts and the subsequent effects that increased avian replication can have on altered epidemiology and disease presentation of the virus.
