Veterinary Medical Center - Next Phase

Veterinary Medical Complex - Next Phase

In September 2025, the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is announcing the launch of a major new phase of our Veterinary Medical Complex. The 10-year Veterinary Medical Complex (VMC) project will transform veterinary education, patient care, research, and service for California. UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine has secured philanthropic gifts for the complex totaling $110.5 million to date, to be applied to an educational pavilion, primary care hospital, raptor education center, high-quality high-volume spay neuter clinic, comprehensive veterinary cancer center, and equine facilities.

The new facilities will further meet the needs of California by:

  • Addressing the workforce shortage - Expanding Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) class sizes from 600 to 800 students to meet California’s critical need for veterinary professionals.
  • Expanding patient care - Increasing annual patient capacity from 50,000 to 75,000 animals, improving access to care across all species.
  • Advancing discovery - Supporting cutting-edge research in cancer, translational medicine, and other key areas of biomedical science.
  • Combating pet overpopulation - Opening a new spay/neuter clinic that will enhance services for shelters and rescues, expand continuing education for veterinarians, and serve as a model for the nation.
  • Supporting food safety and security - Veterinary shortages in dairy, beef, and poultry have raised significant concerns across the state. The VMC will support additional new pipeline programs for food animal veterinarians and systems that enable graduates to provide animal care in underserved areas.
