Dr. Bret McNabb has been appointed as director of the Large Animal Clinic at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), effective April 1, 2020 for a five-year term.

An assistant professor of clinical livestock reproduction in the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Population Health and Reproduction, Dr. McNabb has been service chief for the VMTH’s Livestock Herd Health and Reproduction Service since 2013.

Well respected as a leader, Dr. McNabb’s clinical acumen and dedication to patient care is widely acknowledged and he, along with his service colleagues, has contributed to rebuilding the VMTH’s livestock herd health and reproduction caseload in recent years. He has offered expanded clinical services and is the attending veterinarian for multiple campus herds belonging to the undergraduate Department of Animal Science and two UC field stations.

His leadership will allow us to promote our cultural beliefs and maintain our reputation for excellence in teaching, clinical research and patient care.”

Dr. McNabb is active in maintaining a public presence for the VMTH, providing veterinary services for many animal events throughout California, including the California State Fair and the Professional Bull Riders Tour’s annual event in Sacramento. Dr. McNabb has also contributed materially to the design process for the new Livestock and Field Service Center, as part of the future Veterinary Medical Center at UC Davis.

As director of the Large Animal Clinic—in conjunction with Dr. Sykes and the VMTH leadership team—Dr. McNabb will be responsible for the professional, academic, and ethical affairs; financial health; personnel welfare; and operational efficiency of the Large Animal Clinic. He will be responsible for promoting a culture of clinical excellence; equity, diversity, and inclusion for all; and ensuring a supportive clinical learning environment for students, house officers, and other trainees.
