Goal 3 - Provide Cutting-Edge Clinical Programs

Goal 3 - Provide Cutting-Edge Clinical Programs that Deliver Exceptional Veterinary Services and Support Premier Education, Advanced Specialty Training, and Collaborative Translational Research

Aligned with Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital/Veterinary Medical Center Strategic Plan

Strategy 3.1.  Enhance the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) Services to Promote an Unmatched, Compassionate Patient Care and Client Experience

Tactics:

  • Support and enhance communications provided by faculty, residents and students for continuity of care with referring vets and clients
  • Seek ways to enhance client-oriented services such as concierge services, highly functional animal health care teams, and excellent patient care management
  • Work with VMC administration, faculty, and staff to enhance portal access and information for referring veterinarians and clients
  • Support faculty, residents, students and staff internal communication systems and training for improved patient experience (e.g., phone systems, user-friendly webpages for clinical activities in VIPER with links to VMACS, diagnostic imaging, newsletters and updates, etc.)
  • Design VMC space to be client centric and promote a high quality student experience
  • Evaluate signage, separate check-in and check-out services, help clients navigate the hospital, especially as VMC construction begins
  • Address challenges associated with scheduling multiple appointments with different services on the same day for one patient; promote team approach
  • Support efforts to collect data on client satisfaction and use the information to enhance client experience

Strategy 3.2.  Support Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) Programs that Promote a Culture of Collaboration, Excellent Educational Experiences, and Innovative and Effective Clinical Care

Tactics:

  • Promote programs that support collaborative multidisciplinary patient care and clinical research teams
  • Identify emerging animal health issues and support innovative clinical programs to meet those needs
  • Promote supportive mentoring programs that nurture the professional growth of students and residents
  • Enhance partnerships with industry, practitioners and external stakeholders that promote VMC strategic goals
  • Support efforts to improve hospital culture such as respectful communications; value the efforts of all team members; promote work/life balance and reasonable work expectations; and reward positive behavior, contributions and achievements
  • Encourage effective internal communications in the VMC for transparency - especially related to management initiatives
  • Enhance community practice to improve student practice-ready experiences including communications and business training
  • Seek ways to ensure curriculum quality and flexibility to enhance career goals of students

Strategy 3.3.  Advance Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) Facility Plan, Operations and Infrastructure

Tactics:

  • Continue to seek VMC funding opportunities to support construction design and timelines
  • Evaluate and monitor VMC plans for translational research space, clinical trials and core services to support translational medicine
  • Promote assessments to improve VMC operational and financial efficiencies based on animal patient outcomes, client satisfaction, and hospital personnel work experiences
  • Continue to seek additional funding support for clinical trials, residencies, student scholarship, and clinical care
  • Promote the use of technology to enhance outreach to clients, referring veterinarians, and the community (e.g. patient tracking systems, improved phone/communication systems, telemedicine, on-line courses, and mining big data)
  • Consider reconfiguring clinical sections to unify discipline-based services to streamline patient care (e.g., oncology services – combine radiation, medical and surgical oncology)
  • Enhance efforts to evaluate effective faculty and staff workload in recognition of the increasing caseload, the complexity of new technologies and the time needed to engage in clinical research

Strategy 3.4.  Promote Expertise, Program Breadth and Innovation for Reputation and Philanthropic Success

Tactics:

  • Continue to publically promote hospital successes and innovations that impact clinical outcomes and transformed veterinary medicine
  • Enhance collaborations with UC Davis Health System, and other campus units that advance clinical outcomes, translational medicine, and philanthropic goals
