Eric Eisenman's professional journey to become a UC Davis Vet Med alum, DMV '14, MPVM '15, is both unique and inspiring. Initially drawn to the world of business and culinary arts, he soon found his pursuits leaving an indelible mark on him. However, his true passion was uncovered in an unlikely place—a college biology course. Captivated by cellular biology and the intricacies of life, Eric's academic trajectory shifted as he began taking additional biology courses, leading him deeper into the realm of life sciences. Upon graduating from University of Oregon with a BS in Biology, he began exploring his options between pre-med and pre-vet.

Though his veterinary aspirations were still unclear, practical experience was something he sought after. His uncle, who owned a private veterinary practice, provided Eric his first real foray into the field. Through a summer internship, he was introduced to surgeries and procedures, solidifying his interest in veterinary medicine. 

Eric's professional growth took him to San Francisco's SPCA, where he began as a client service representative at the vet hospital. His dedication saw him advance to the role of vet assistant, placing him on the frontlines of animal welfare.

However, his quest for knowledge was not without challenges. A temporary delay in his path to veterinary school saw him journey through South America for eight months. From Patagonia to Guatemala, Eric observed the disparities in animal welfare initiatives between the US and other countries. These observations spurred him into action, driving him to think of ways to streamline and enhance international veterinary programs.

The doors of UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine eventually opened for Eric, and it was here that he sowed the seeds of the International Veterinary Outreach (IVO) Club. As the founding president of IVO, he transformed it from a mere student club into an organization at the vanguard of global animal welfare.

Eric's experiences, especially witnessing the heart-wrenching conditions of strays in countries like Bolivia and Nicaragua, played a profound role in shaping his mission with IVO. Under his leadership, IVO has worked extensively with grassroots groups of dedicated veterinarians, aiming to provide quality care with limited resources. Focused on collaboration, the organization bridges gaps in veterinary initiatives between countries, working closely with dedicated veterinarians, particularly in areas with limited resources.

Today, Eric wears many hats. From being an ambassador for IVO, fostering partnerships, to implementing training programs and working hands-on with animals and new veterinarians, he is relentless in his efforts. The technological advances of the modern era have further amplified IVO's reach, allowing them to operate in multiple countries simultaneously. “Access to care is a national discussion but it needs to be explored internationally. IVO is doing this, and the progress being made is remarkable.”

Numerous UC Davis Veterinary Medicine alumni collaborate with Eric under the banner of International Veterinary Outreach. Among these esteemed professionals is Dr. Marissa Woodall-Johnson, DVM ’15, a pivotal clinical leader within IVO. The organization's board of directors also boasts the distinguished Dr. Julie Breher, DVM ’97. Additionally, many UC Davis SVM alumni serve as dedicated volunteers, partnering with Eric to further the non-profit's mission of global recognition and veterinary outreach.

Away from the demands of IVO, Eric cherishes his personal life. This year saw him welcome his son, Ahciliz, named after the Mayan God of the Eclipse, a significant cultural nod to his wife's Guatemalan heritage. Residing in a cozy rowhouse flat in San Francisco with his wife, son, and two cats, Jade and Luna, Eric balances his commitment to IVO with his love for the outdoors, be it hiking, camping, snowboarding, or rafting. Eric Eisenman is not just a figurehead for IVO; he's its beating heart. His unwavering belief in the potential of veterinary health at an international level continues to drive IVO's mission, striving to bring the best in animal welfare across borders.
